A few things to make you laugh

While reading around the blogosphere these past couple of weeks I've found several funny posts. While I love searching for deals, printing those coupons, and reading about everyone's mad grocery shopping skills....some of my favorite posts are just about everyone's everyday lives and the humorous things they've come across. These following links are pretty funny in my opinion.

I found
this letter this morning while following a link-back to my page from Wicked Cool Deals.

This video is so funny - It's called: Proof Women are Born This Way
Dining with Debbie had this posted on her site a few weeks ago.

After watching that video I saw this one. I had actually seen it on the News (The Today Show I think) a few days before. It's too cute.

AND THEN........ it reminded me of watching the Justin Timberlake and Beyonce Single Ladies Parody on SNL. I can't seem to find the video anymore on Hulu but it is on YouTube, just very poor quality - but still equally as hilarious.

Last month I read
this on The Suburban Jungle. It's a hilarious but sort of sad little post about her son's "new pet"......kind of.

Last but not least I read this post on Money Saving Mom's website last week. It wasn't so much the post that made me laugh, it was the comments....one in particular. This is a portion of what she wrote: "I try to stay on the "sane" side of many, many things. I TRY to recycle, TRY to be frugal, TRY to be superwoman. I am completely successful at NONE of these endeavors, and that is okay!!
I also do not: take extra condiment packs and squeeze them into a ketchup bottle (read that one), save my soggy cereal remains for use in pancakes (read that one, too), or make my kids play-doh out of dryer lint.
"

REALLY???? Do people really use soggy cereal in pancake mix? Or dryer lint to make Play-Doh?? How is that even possible? Is that extra spoonful of cereal added to the mix really going to make that many more pancakes?? I'm all for being frugal but that seems to be going a little too far. Thanks "Olathe Mom" for brightening my day a little.

Well, there you have it. Just a few things to make you laugh, (hopefully), to get you through the rest of the week.
Have you come across anything good this week? If so, leave a link in the comments. I love a good laugh.

New printable coupons for Disney Movies

I found some awesome coupons that would be great to use to pick up some cheap Christmas gifts for that Disney Channel lover in your life. These printable coupons aren't for the same Disney movies I grew up watching like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or the Lion King - they are for movies from Disney Channel's most popular shows. The coupons can be used on these 4 movies: Sonny With a Chance: Sonny's Big Break, The Suite Life on Deck: Anchor's Away, Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana and Jonas: Rockin' the House. If you buy any 2 movies get $10.00 off, Buy any 3 Save $20.00 and buy all 4 and Save $30.00. These are Brick's printables and it says it's a limited time offer so they probably expire soon.

I haven't had a chance to check the prices of these movies in store but
Walmart.com lists them as only $12.86 each (except for Jonas: Rockin the House which is $13.86). Buy 2 and after coupon you'll only pay $7.86 each, buy 3 and pay $6.19 each after coupon or buy all 4 and pay $5.61 each after the coupon. If you have your purchase shipped to any Walmart store to pick up, shipping is FREE. You can also shop through Mr. Rebates and get 2% cash back. (If you're not already signed up with Mr. Rebates you can get $5.00 just for doing so!)

You know, I have to be honest. I've never really done much shopping online. Actually, until this past year, I don't think I've EVER bought anything online. But with all the coupon codes, cash back sites, chances for FREE shipping, (and also sometimes prices are even cheaper online than in the store), I don't think I want to leave my house to shop again! Well, maybe that isn't true but I'm hoping to at least do a part of my Christmas shopping online.

**Let me know if you find prices for these movies cheaper elsewhere.

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

This weekend we carved pumpkins for Halloween. I look forward to it every year - mainly because I like to roast the seeds that we scoop from the insides. It makes a tasty snack and if you've got them pumpkins to carve already, why not get a free snack out of the deal?? It's really a simple process.

After you cut the top off of your pumpkin, scoop out the insides - all the seeds and stringy stuff.

Next, sort through and put all of your seeds in a strainer. Rinse them off to remove any slimy pumpkin residue and strings that are still attached

Put them all on a cookie sheet. Some people let them dry for 24 hours before toasting. I usually don't but this time I did let them dry overnight. I can't say that I noticed any difference.

You'll want to either spray with non-stick spray or mix with a little butter or oil so they crisp well. I like to add Tony Chachere's cajun seasoning to mine. Some people just use salt or cinnamon and sugar. This year I tried
this recipe. It was actually pretty tasty. Bake them at 350 for about 45 minutes or until they get crunchy. Watch them carefully - they can burn quickly. Every 10 minutes or so I like to take them out and stir them around. After they're done store them in an airtight container.

Here's a picture of our pumpkins too...............

I'm really not much of an artist but I searched for free printable pumpkin carving templates on Swagbucks and my kids found these two designs that they liked.

Do any of you have a good pumpkin seed recipe? Leave your recipes in the comments section.

Free Sample Kit of Always and Tampax PLUS a coupon for a FREE 18 pack of Always Infinity Pads

A few weeks ago I signed up for a FREE sample kit from Beinggirl that included 2 Tampax Pearl Tampons, 1 Compak Pearl Tampon, 1 Always Infinity Pad, 2 Always Pantiliners and 1 Always Feminine Wipe. I received it in the mail on Monday but didn't actually open it until last night. I know there are almost always coupons in the product samples I receive so I unwrapped everything and much to my surprise - there was a coupon for a FREE up to 18 count package of Always Infinity! Wow! I appreciate all the coupons that are sent in samples but this one well exceeded my expectations. These are expensive (in my opinion.) There was also a coupon for $2.00 off any 1 size Tampax Pearl or Tampax Compak Pearl. This sounds like a very good coupon also but I honestly don't usually buy Tampax so I don't know what they cost.
I love signing up for these sample packs. They are usually very generous and I throw them in my purse. The Kotex sample packs come with coupons for $1.00 off any Kotex product which can get you FREE pantiliners at Walmart.

I'd love to hear from any of you that may have received this sample kit. Did your's come with a FREE product coupon too?

I took off from blogging for a week....and it was nice...but I missed it too.

For the past week I haven't typed so much as one word here on Shelby Making Cents. It was actually quite nice and relaxing, but I missed it too. What did I do?? Cooked, baked, spent time with friends and family, carved pumpkins - and roasted the seeds, cleaned (although you could never tell), worked a little more closely with potty training with my son, stretched - I forgot how good it feels to really just stretch, discovered Starfall with my kids, had a game night, learned that my son can count to ten all by himself, relaxed with my husband. What didn't I do?? Blog, grocery shop, keep my dishes done for more than 12 hours, get dressed in real clothes every day - I'm not ashamed, buy a Sunday paper *Gasp!*, or shower...no I'm just kidding with that one...that would be gross.
I hope you all visited around the blogosphere though because while I did not write (I even turned the computer off one whole day) , I did visit a few of my favorite blogs, and I know there were some great deals to be had and some very interesting posts.

Menu Plan Monday

I didn't have to cook dinner Saturday or Sunday because we had birthday parties to attend so I only have 5 dinners to share for this Menu Plan Monday.
Monday - Chicken and Dumplings (hubby's request), Crusty French Rolls
Tuesday - Shepard's Pie, Crescent rolls
Wednesday - Chicken and black bean tostadas, salad
Thursday - Chili, carrot and bell pepper strips, I also might try to make some Jalapeno Cornbread if I can find a good recipe.
Friday - Pizza - (frozen pizzas that I picked up for $0.50!)

I'm keeping things simple this week. All of these are warm, comfy foods and with the change in weather, it sounds so good. We also need to recoup from this weekend. We were gone for most of Friday night until Sunday night running around for birthday parties, etc. I'm looking forward to relaxing at home now.

All this for $20.00!!

I haven't yet managed to finish our grocery shopping for last week. I still have a few things to pick up in order to make dinners for this week. But I did get to take a quick trip to Schnucks Saturday evening while we were in the city. I managed to pick up everything in this picture for $16.00 and received a catalina for $4.00 off my next trip. I got: 2 boxes Ziploc Freezer bags, 2 boxes Kleenex, 1 Dawn dish soap, 3 boxes Kashi cereal, 4 boxes pizza rolls, 4 cans Rotel (2 not pictured), 2 boxes Barilla pasta, 1 box Brown and Serve sausage patties, 3 bags Green Giant Steamers Veggies, 3 bags Bird's Eye Freshlike frozen veggies, 4 cans Pillsbury crescent rolls, 6 cans (4 not pictured) Grands biscuits, 2 cans (1 not pictured) Pillsbury Cinnamon rolls. ( I had to take this picture with my Video Camera because I have lost the charger for my camera....and also for my sister's camera.)

While downtown in Soulard Saturday for Oktoberfest we went into the market and I picked up some fresh veggies. I only paid $4.00 for all of this.

I got this bag of grapes that weighs probably 3 lbs. for $1.00, a package of 3 Romaine hearts for $1.00, 3 big bulbs of garlic for $1.00 and 10 lemons for $1.00. Also pictured are jalapenos (on the brown paper bag and also in the ziploc bag). The peppers in the ziploc bag I already de-seeded cut in half and froze to make stuffed jalepenos. There are also about 13 bell peppers and 25 banana peppers and 4 green tomatoes. These are the veggies we picked from my Sister-in-law's garden. There was actually A LOT more than this but we shared with some friends.

I do still have to pick up some dairy products and meat but I think we'll definitely be under our $75 grocery budget for this week.

Veggies fresh from the Garden

In a hurried attemp to help my mother-in-law move last night we discovered that my sister-in-law's garden was still producing veggies.....lots of them! She had given up on it long ago and had no idea they were there! If any of you are from...well...anywhere in the midwest here.....you know we have been getting pounded with some rain for the past couple of days. If it were warm enough, and not still raining, I might try to take a swim in my front yard - there's that much water. So last night after moving furniture - in a thunderstorm in the dark - we raided her garden. We picked bags full of a rainbow of colors of bell, banana and jalapeno peppers and also tomatoes. We did see a few squash, (one was 2 foot long!) but they were going bad already and it too dark to really search for more, and we were soaked. After bringing our bags inside she told us to take it all home! I'm not one to say no to something FREE, especially such a delicious variety of healthy veggies, so we did. I'll now be spending part of my day cutting, chopping and freezing peppers because there is NO WAY we can use all of these before they go bad. I think I'll have enough to use until next summer.
